For Nathan Hamlin, the coalfields of West Virginia, in the bleak days of winter, are a harsh reminder of the grief caused by the sudden death of his father in a mine collapse. Christmas, and the presence each year of an enormous box of Christmas candy, serves only to deepen the longing for his father. Still, there is hope of renewal as Christmas approaches and knowing the box of candy will once again appear. But Nathan learns that it takes more than the magic of Christmas candy to still his sorrow and fill the emptiness in his heart.
